still in shipyard phase 🙂

She's a sturdy one, built for the open seas, and has seen her fair share of horizons.

When it comes to luxury yachts, the Hans Christian 33 model isn’t just a name; it’s a benchmark. It encapsulates the finest aspects of yachting, combining classic design with impeccable craftsmanship. Let’s anchor our focus on this sea marvel and chart its distinguishing features.

Hans Christian 33: A Reliable Old Dame of the Seas

The Hans Christian 33, also known as the Hans Christian 33 Traditional and the Traditional 33, is a Taiwanese sailboat designed by Harwood Ives. She first graced the waters in 1980, and since then, 168 of her kind have been built. This design is an evolution of the Hans Christian 38 and 42, and she’s been built by several shipyards over the years, including Hans Christian Yachts, Hansa Yachts Und Shifbau, and Shing Fa Boatbuilding Company, to name a few.

Technical Specs:

The Hans Christian 33 is not just about luxury. It offers a smooth sailing experience, even in the choppiest of waters. Thanks to its sturdy build and simple but durable propulsion system.

  • Displacement: 19,000 lb (8,618 kg)
  • Draft: 5.50 ft (1.68 m)
  • Hull Type: Monohull, made of Fiberglass
  • LOA (Length Overall): 33.75 ft (10.29 m)
  • LWL (Length Waterline): 29.17 ft (8.89 m)
  • Beam: 11.67 ft (3.56 m)
  • Engine: Yanmar diesel engine
  • Keel/Board Type: Long keel
  • Rig Type: Bermuda rig with a Cutter rigged sloop
  • Total Sail Area: 599.70 sq ft (55.714 m2)

She’s a recreational keelboat, predominantly made of fiberglass with some fine wood trim. With a cutter rig, a spooned raked stern, and a bulbous rounded transom, she’s a sight to behold. The Hans Christian 33 has a keel-mounted rudder controlled by a wheel, an optional bowsprit, and a fixed long keel. She’s powered by a Japanese Yanmar diesel engine, which is quite simple to maintenance and can making long voyages a breeze.

Below deck, she offers unconventional accommodations, with a double Pullman berth aft on the starboard side and another forward on the port side. The galley is conveniently located on the port side, just aft of the dinette table. The boat makes extensive use of teak above decks and mahogany below, giving her that classic, timeless look wher every inch resonates with grandeur.

A Sailor's Perspective:

Having sailed her, I can tell you she’s seakindly, without the tendency to bounce or bob over waves. She’s not the fastest dame on the water (but that’s what we don’t expect from the ladies, right?), but she’s reliable. The Hans Christian 33 is a stout, safe, and comfortable bluewater cruiser. But, like any old dame, she requires some maintenance, especially if you want to keep her teak decks and wooden elements in Bristol fashion.

In my opinion, I’ve come across many vessels, but the HC 33 holds a special place in my heart. Small but brave. She’s not just a boat; she’s a trusted companion on the open seas. So, if you’re looking for a reliable, classic sailboat that has stood the test of time, the Hans Christian 33 might just be the one for you. Safe sailing, mate.   ?‍☠️?
